The short version
If you sell gifts online, the most important packaging date of the year is close. Christmas 2026 falls on Friday, December 25, and Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26, which puts Black Friday on November 27 and Cyber Monday on November 30. Working backwards from December, our US packaging calendar shows October 30 as the order-by date for holiday gifting packaging on a standard timeline.
That date is not arbitrary. It allows about a week to finalize artwork and approve your proof, 10–14 business days of production after approval, 3–7 business days of shipping, and enough time to receive boxes, photograph them and start packing before December orders peak.
Why December packaging needs an early start
Three things make the holiday season different from the rest of the year:
- Everyone orders at once. Printers, board suppliers and freight carriers all reach their busiest weeks in November.
- Carriers slow down. Parcel networks carry their highest volumes between Thanksgiving and Christmas, so inbound deliveries of your packaging take longer too.
- Your own team is busy. The weeks you would normally use to fix a sizing problem or reprint a card are the weeks you are packing the most orders.
Ordering early turns all three into non-issues. You approve your proof calmly, boxes arrive in November, and your team packs into packaging it has already tested.
If Black Friday is your big weekend
For Black Friday and Cyber Monday, packaging should be in your warehouse well before the weekend, because volume spikes from the first hour. The standard order-by date for that weekend has already passed, but there is still a lot you can do:
- Check stock today. Count mailers, shipping boxes, tape, tissue and cards against your expected order volume.
- Prioritize your best-selling box. Reorder the size that ships most orders first.
- Use what you have creatively. A seasonal sticker, holiday tissue or a printed card turns your standard box into a holiday edition without new tooling.
- Ask about faster options. Depending on style and quantity, digital printing and simpler finishes can shorten timelines. Contact us with your date and we will tell you honestly what is possible.
Holiday packaging ideas that work
Gift-ready mailers. A mailer box with a printed interior and a short holiday message makes the unboxing feel like a gift, even when customers buy for themselves.
Rigid and magnetic gift boxes. For premium gifts, sets and corporate gifting, magnetic closure boxes and rigid boxes are kept and reused long after the holidays.
Limited editions without new boxes. Holiday sleeves, custom stickers and seasonal tissue paper are the fastest, lowest-risk way to make packaging feel seasonal.
A card with one clear message. A thank-you card with a gift note, care tips or a January offer keeps the relationship going after the holidays.
Keep an eye on shipping costs
Holiday orders often include bundles and gift sets that end up in oversized boxes. Every extra inch adds dimensional weight. Before the rush, run your most common box sizes through the DIM weight calculator and check whether a slightly smaller box would cut your shipping bill on every order.
Your holiday packaging checklist
- Confirm your key dates: last order date for Christmas delivery, Black Friday launch, any in-store events.
- Check packaging stock against expected orders, with a buffer.
- Order holiday packaging by October 30 for December gifting.
- Approve proofs quickly; delays at proof stage are the most common cause of missed dates.
- Test-pack a few orders as soon as boxes arrive.
- Plan January: reorder evergreen boxes and start Valentine's Day packaging in December.
