What is a pillow box?
A pillow box is a small paperboard box with curved ends that fold in to close, giving it the soft, rounded shape of a pillow. It is formed from a single die-cut blank with a glued side seam and curved creases at each end. Press the curved ends inward and the box closes; push them out and it opens. No tabs, no tape.
Pillow boxes are light, inexpensive and charming. They are used for jewelry, gift cards, hair accessories, small cosmetics, soap, candy, favors, samples, socks and promotional items. Because they ship flat and assemble in a second, they are also a favorite for events and retail counters.

Why choose a pillow box
- Instantly giftable. The shape feels like a present without ribbons or wrapping.
- Low cost. One small piece of board, quick to make, quick to assemble.
- Ships and stores flat. Hundreds fit in a small carton.
- Easy to brand. A large, continuous print surface around the curve.
- Versatile. Add a window, a handle, a sleeve or a hang tab.
Pillow boxes are not designed for heavy or fragile products, and they need an outer shipper if sent by mail.
Pillow box variations
| Variation | Description | Uses |
|---|---|---|
| Classic pillow | Curved ends, glued side seam | Jewelry, gift cards, favors |
| Window pillow | Die-cut window, optional film | Candy, soap, colorful products |
| Pillow with handle | Cut-out handle at the top | Event favors, bakery treats |
| Pillow with sleeve | Printed sleeve over a plain pillow | Seasonal and multi-SKU branding |
| Hanging pillow | Header with hang hole | Peg-hook retail |
| Long pillow | Elongated shape | Pens, hair tools, ties, cosmetics |
Materials
- SBS paperboard (14–18pt): bright white for vivid colors and photos.
- Kraft paperboard (14–18pt): natural brown; looks great with dark ink or white ink.
- Recycled board: economical, widely recyclable.
- Metallic or textured specialty board: premium favors and luxury samples.
Pillow boxes need board that curves smoothly; very thick board (24pt) can crack at the curved creases, so 14–18pt is the typical range.
Printing and finishes
Print all around the pillow with digital (short runs, many designs) or offset (larger runs, exact color). Finishes that suit pillow boxes:
- Foil stamping for names and logos on favors and jewelry.
- Spot UV for glossy accents.
- Matte or soft-touch lamination for a premium hand-feel.
- Windows to show the contents.
- White ink on kraft for a striking natural look.
Tip: The curved ends distort artwork slightly. Keep logos and text on the flat center panels, not on the curves.

Sizing pillow boxes
Pillow boxes are specified by length × width × depth:
- Length: the long dimension, from curved end to curved end (the flat panel length).
- Width: the flat width of the box.
- Depth: the thickness at the fullest point of the curve.
Depth is limited by the curve: a pillow box is typically no deeper than about one third of its width. For thicker items, consider a tuck end box or a two-piece box.
Popular sizes:
| Size (L × W × D, in) | Typical contents |
|---|---|
| 3.5 × 2.5 × 1 | Rings, earrings, small favors |
| 5 × 3 × 1.25 | Gift cards, jewelry, lip care |
| 7 × 3.5 × 1.6 | Soap, hair accessories, socks |
| 8 × 2 × 1 | Pens, mascara, small tools |
| 9 × 5 × 2 | Scarves, larger favors |

Save on pillow boxes
- Choose kraft with one ink color.
- Keep the size standard across several products.
- Use a printed sleeve or sticker on plain pillows for small, varied runs.
Designing a pillow box
The dieline shows two main flat panels (front and back), a glue flap and the curved end flaps. Place the logo centered on the front panel, keep text off the curved creases and extend background colors into bleed. If you want text to read correctly when the box sits on a counter, check the orientation on your proof.
Pillow boxes by use
- Jewelry and accessories: small pillows with foil logos. See jewelry boxes.
- Soap and bath: kraft pillows with windows. See soap boxes.
- Weddings, events and favors: printed names and dates, metallic boards.
- Gift cards and vouchers: slim pillows with brand colors.
- Samples and promotions: low-cost branded giveaways.
- Bakery and candy: food-safe board and windows. See bakery boxes.
Sustainability
Pillow boxes use a small amount of board, have no plastic closure, and are recyclable in most curbside programs. Choose uncoated or aqueous-coated board and skip plastic windows for the most recyclable option.

How a pillow box is constructed
A pillow box is made from a single die-cut piece of paperboard with a glued side seam. Its ends are formed by curved score lines: when the box is squeezed, the curved flaps fold inward and lock, creating the characteristic pillow shape. No glue is needed to close it, and it opens by pressing the ends.
The curved scores are what make pillow boxes distinctive, but they also define their limits: the box is best for light, flat or soft items. Heavier products push the ends open, and bulky products distort the shape.
Ideal products for pillow boxes
- Jewelry and accessories: bracelets, earrings, hair accessories
- Gift cards and vouchers: a premium alternative to an envelope
- Small cosmetics: lip balms, sample sets, sheet masks
- Soaps: small bars wrapped in tissue
- Candy and favors: wedding, party and event favors
- Apparel accessories: ties, socks, scarves
- Promotional items: USB drives, pins, small merchandise
Products should generally be light (under a few ounces) and fit within the flatter central area of the box.
Pillow box variations in detail

| Classic pillow | Two curved ends | Favors, accessories |
| Pillow with window | Die-cut window, open or with film | Showing the product |
| Pillow with handle | Integrated die-cut handle | Gift and event packaging |
| Pillow with sleeve | Separate printed band or sleeve | Premium, versioned designs |
| Long pillow | Elongated shape | Pens, cosmetics, ties |
| Kraft pillow | Uncoated kraft paperboard | Natural and handmade brands |
Pillow boxes for events and seasonal campaigns
Pillow boxes are a staple of event packaging because they are inexpensive, ship flat and assemble in seconds. Ideas:
- Wedding favors with names and dates printed or stickered
- Corporate event gifts with a branded sleeve
- Holiday gift sets in seasonal colors
- Product sampling at trade shows and pop-ups
- Influencer mailers for small products, packed inside a protective mailer
With digital printing, short runs of personalized or seasonal designs are economical.
Worked example: a jewelry brand's pillow box
A jewelry brand ships bracelets in a 6 × 3 × 1.25 in pillow box.
- Board: 18pt kraft paperboard.
- Print: one-color black logo, centered.
- Finish: gold foil on the logo.
- Inside: the bracelet sits on a small printed card with care instructions.
- Shipping: pillow boxes are packed in a small corrugated mailer with tissue for e-commerce.
See jewelry boxes.
Common mistakes with pillow boxes
- Products too heavy, forcing the ends open.
- Products too thick, distorting the shape.
- Text near the curved ends, which warps.
- Shipping pillow boxes without an outer box.
- Very thick board, which makes the curved folds crack; 16–18pt is usually ideal.
Why pillow boxes feel like a gift
Pillow boxes have a soft, rounded silhouette that is unusual among boxes, and that unusual shape is the source of their charm. They look closer to an envelope or a wrapped sweet than a carton, which makes even a small item feel like a present. Because they close by pressing the curved ends, there is no tape to cut and no flap to tear; customers squeeze the ends and the box opens. That simple, tactile moment suits favors, jewelry, gift cards and small accessories.
The shape also has practical benefits. Pillow boxes are made from a single sheet with one glue seam, so they ship completely flat and take almost no storage space. They assemble in a second by hand, which is why event planners and wedding stationers like them for large numbers of favors.
Personalizing pillow boxes
Because pillow boxes are inexpensive and often used for events, personalization is common:
- Names and dates for weddings and parties, printed digitally or on a sticker
- Seasonal sleeves or bands around a standard box
- Gift tags tied with ribbon through a punched hole
- Different colors per product in a range
- Messages inside printed on the inner surface
Digital printing makes short personalized runs practical.
Pillow boxes in one paragraph
A pillow box is a curved, glue-free paperboard box that closes by pressing its ends, perfect for light gifts, favors, jewelry and cards. Choose 16–18pt board so the curves fold cleanly, keep artwork centered on the flat faces, add a sleeve, sticker or ribbon for a gift feel, and pack pillow boxes inside a mailer when shipping.
Three real-world scenarios
Wedding favors for 150 guests. A couple wants sugared almonds in a keepsake box. A 5 × 2.5 × 1 in pillow box in pearlescent white board, with the couple's initials and date printed on a kraft band, makes an elegant favor. The boxes arrive flat and are assembled and filled in an afternoon.
A jewelry brand's gift-card program. Gift cards sold at markets looked plain in envelopes. A black kraft-look pillow box with a gold foil logo holds the card on a small printed insert, making the gift card itself feel like a present.
A soap maker's sample bars. Small guest soaps go into kraft pillow boxes with a small open window so customers can smell the scent. Each scent uses a different colored sticker seal, so one box design serves the whole range.
A buyer's guide to pillow boxes
Check that your product suits the shape. Pillow boxes are slim in the middle and taper toward the curved ends. Products should be light and fit within the central area. Bulky or heavy items push the ends open; they are better in a small two-piece or tuck end box.
Choose board for the curves. The curved score lines need board that bends smoothly. 16–18pt SBS or kraft is ideal; thicker board can crack along the curves, and very thin board feels flimsy.
Size from the product. Measure the product's length, width and thickness, then allow room for any card or tissue. We will translate that into a pillow box blank with the right curve depth.
Keep artwork on the flat faces. The center of each face is flat and the most visible; the ends curve and distort. Logos and text work best centered.
Add a finishing touch. A sticker seal, ribbon, printed band or hang tag turns a simple box into a gift. These small additions often matter more than complex printing.
Plan for shipping. Pillow boxes protect light items but not against parcel handling. For e-commerce, pack them in a small mailer with tissue.
Use digital printing for events. Short runs with names, dates or seasonal designs are economical with digital printing, or use stickers and bands on a standard box.

Terms to know
- Curved score: A curved crease that lets the ends fold into a pillow shape.
- Glue seam: The single glued joint along the side of the box.
- Band: A printed paper strip wrapped around the box.
- Sticker seal: A small label that holds the box or tissue closed.
- Colored-through board: Board dyed through its thickness, so edges match the surface color.
- Variable printing: Digital printing that changes text or images from box to box.
Photographing your pillow boxes
Pillow boxes are small, so photograph them in groups or with context: on a place setting for wedding favors, beside a jewelry piece, or with a ribbon and gift tag. A three-quarter angle shows the curved ends that make the shape distinctive. Use soft, diffused light to avoid hot spots on the curves.

Sizes are made to order; these are starting points to adjust to your product.
Pillow boxes and sustainability
Pillow boxes are among the most material-efficient gift boxes: a single sheet of board, one glue seam, no inserts in most cases and flat shipping. Kraft or recycled board and water-based inks keep them easy to recycle. Avoid plastic film windows and glitter if recyclability matters, and choose paper ribbon or twine over synthetic ribbon.
Quality checks when your boxes arrive
- Form a few boxes from different bundles: the curved ends should fold smoothly without cracking.
- Check that the ends stay closed when the box is gently shaken with the product inside.
- Inspect print on the flat faces for color against your approved proof.
- Check the glue seam is closed along its full length.
- Count bundles against the packing list and note any damaged cartons on the delivery receipt.
Report anything that does not match your approved proof within 7 days of delivery under our reprint guarantee, with photos and your order number.

Small, light items such as jewelry, gift cards, cosmetics samples, soap, candy, favors and accessories.
What is the minimum order?
Our minimum for custom pillow boxes is 250 units.
How deep can a pillow box be?
Usually up to about one third of its width. Thicker products need a different box style.
Do pillow boxes need glue or tape to close?
No. The curved ends fold in and hold the box closed.
Can pillow boxes be mailed?
They can travel inside an envelope or mailer, but they are not designed to be shipped on their own.
Can I add a window?
Yes. Die-cut windows with or without film are available.
Are pillow boxes recyclable?
Yes. Paperboard pillow boxes are widely recyclable.
Do pillow boxes need glue to close?
No. The curved end flaps lock by pressure. A sticker or ribbon can add security.
Can pillow boxes be printed inside?
Yes, though the inside is less visible than on other styles. A pattern or color inside adds a nice touch when the box is opened.
What board thickness is best?
16–18pt paperboard folds the curved ends smoothly. Thicker board can crack on the curves.
What can I put in a pillow box?
Light, slim items: jewelry, gift cards, cosmetics samples, soaps, candy, small accessories, USB drives and favors. Products should usually weigh no more than a few ounces and be flatter than the box's thickest point.
How thick is a pillow box?
It depends on the size and the curve of the ends. A box about 7 in long and 3.5 in wide is often around 1.5 in thick at its center. Send your product dimensions and we will size the box.
Can pillow boxes be used for shipping?
They are not designed to travel alone through parcel networks. Pack pillow boxes inside a mailer or shipping box with a little tissue or fill.
Do pillow boxes come flat?
Yes. They ship flat with one glued seam and form in a second by pressing the curved ends inward.
Can I add a handle or ribbon?
Yes. Integrated die-cut handles, ribbon holes and sticker seals are all common.
What materials are available?
Most pillow boxes are made from 16–18pt SBS or kraft paperboard. Colored-through and specialty papers are also possible for premium favors.
Can pillow boxes have windows?
Yes, with or without film. A small window is a nice way to show color or texture.
Can each pillow box have a different name printed?
Yes, with digital variable printing, or more simply with personalized stickers or bands on a standard box.
Can pillow boxes stand up?
They are designed to lie flat or be held. For shelf display, place them in a tray or display box.
Can pillow boxes be made from kraft?
Yes. Kraft pillow boxes are popular for natural, handmade and rustic brands, often with one dark ink or a gold foil logo.
How do I open a pillow box?
Press gently on one curved end; the flaps pop outward and the box opens. Pressing them back in closes it again.
Can I order pillow boxes in several colors?
Yes. With digital printing, several designs or colors can be produced in one order of the same size.
Do you offer free design help for pillow boxes?
Yes. Every quote includes a free dieline for your exact size, an artwork check and a digital and 3D proof. Our designers can also lay out a design from your logo and brand colors.
