Claims that are clear, true and easy to defend
Customers want lower-impact packaging, and regulators want claims they can trust. Vague words like "eco-friendly" are hard to support; specific claims such as "box made from 90% recycled paperboard" are both more persuasive and easier to back up. This kit shows how to phrase common packaging claims, based on the FTC Green Guides and current state laws.
What's inside
Six claim types
General environmental claims, recyclable, recycled content, compostable and biodegradable, plastic-free and source reduction, and certifications. Each claim type has:
- A plain-English summary of the rule
- A risk rating for using it unqualified
- A don't / do table of example claims
- Four tests before you print
- Questions to ask your supplier
- A realistic scenario and space to rewrite your own claim
State-law watch-list
Packaging extended producer responsibility (EPR) laws, California SB 343 on recyclability claims and the chasing-arrows symbol, plastic and foam restrictions, and recycled-content requirements.
Templates
Twenty adaptable phrases, a disposal-instruction label layout and an evidence-file template so you can prove each claim in minutes.
Important
This kit is a planning aid, not legal advice. The FTC has been reviewing the Green Guides and state laws change often. Confirm current requirements before printing claims.
Format
12-page PDF, print-friendly.

Frequently asked questions
Can I still say my packaging is recyclable?
Often yes, if recycling for that material is widely available where you sell and the whole component is recyclable. The kit shows when and how to qualify the claim.
Does it cover certification logos?
Yes: when you may use a certification mark, and why a self-made "eco" badge is a bad idea.
